                                    Touch Rugby Triumphant

Congratulations to SOPHIE WHITE who last Sunday was part of the Nunweek Blue year 5/6 team that won their final 8-0 over the Bay Cluster (Sumner) at a Canterbury Touch Tournament held at Sheldon Park, Belfast.

Sophie has been playing touch for Nunweek since the start of the season. In order to be selected for the team, Sophie was up against all the other teams at her level in the Nunweek module.

Not only did Sophie's team win the final; they went through unbeaten in all their games.

And here she is, proudly wearing her medal. Way to go, Sophie. You're awesome.

                                          Dancing queen

                                Emma Imrutai

Emma's dance school held their prize giving recently. Many dancers received awards, but we think Emma received an award that all teachers would be proud to award - that of The MOST ENJOYABLE Student to Teach for the Junior School.

Way to go, Emma.

A Touch Rugby Double

Touch rugby seems to bring out the best in sibling competitiveness, and we have another example for you.

Recently we brought to your attention the Woodgate 3 -  Samantha, Brayden and Carter, who received player of the day awards on the same day.

Well, not to be outdone, the Hillyer sisters (Courtney- Rm 5 and Mackenzie - Rm 23) both received player of the day certificates for their respective teams on the same day. Courtney and Mackenzie are active in a number of sports and we look forward to them both representing the school to showcase their talents.

Here they are, all smiles.

Trampoline success

Our athletes have a wide range of skills and interests. Today we celebrate the amazing Courtney Hillyer of Room 5.

During the first week of the October school holidays Courtney Hillyer of Rm5 was part of the Canterbury Trampoline team who went to Nationals held in Napier.  She competed in all 3 disciplines and had exceptional results considering it was the first year she was eligible and was one of the youngest in the whole competition.  She was placed 4th= out of 19 in the 10 and under girls individual trampoline, 7th out of 17 in the 10 and under girls double mini trampoline and with her partner came  4th out of 8 pairs in the 10 and under synchronised trampoline.

Way to go, Courtney. Another example of Oaklands students achieving in the world of sport.

At last Friday's touch competition something amazing happened. Player of the Day certificates were handed out for each of the Oaklands teams. Nothing amazing about that, you say. True. But what if I said that 3 members of one family each received a Player of the Day. Now that is amazing.

And we have proof. Here are the awesome Brayden, Samantha and Carter Woodgate.

Well done, team Woodgate. Great kids doing great things in sport.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ben Hanson and Dylan Creighton are in year 1. They both play tee-ball for Halswell and received awards recently.

Ben received the Player of the Day and Dylan the Hardest Trier.

Well done, Boys. Another example of Oaklands students excelling in the world of sport.

She was awarded a 3rd prize, a very highly recommended, a highly recommended and a recommended in the different categories she participated in. Emma rounded off a successful event by being awarded the ‘JT dancers most memorable item under 10. According to the judge, very few first time competitors receive this award.

Wednesday 15th May

Today we celebrate two talented sisters.
Xanthe and Iona Simpson love their netball and, by the looks of the trophies they are holding, do very well at it.

The girls play netball for the Halswell Rugby Netball Club; Xanthe for the Future Ferns Yr 5  and Iona for the Primary Team C .

Here are the girls with their trophies recognising their efforts.

Today we celebrate 3 talented netballers.

Hannah Hanson, Beth Waretini and Tamsin Staff are part of the netball future ferns under 10 summer league at Action Indoor Sports. Their team, the Future Fern Stars, came second in the final to the Fendalton Ferns. The score was 15 - 9, but I have it on good authority that the girls won the second half and were leading the come back.

Well done, girls.

Friday 12 April

Today we celebrate 4 talented BMX riders.
Melahkye Green, Neihana Nihoniho and Ashton Stocker of Room 5 and Caleb Bellamy of Room 1.

The boys competed in the New Zealand BMX Championships at the Cambridge BMX Club from 29th - 31st March.

At stake was a chance to qualify for the the UCI BMX World Championships to be held at Auckland's Vector Arena in July 2013.

Aside from the usual thrills and spills of BMX racing the boys did their best and came away all the better for the experience.

Here are the boys in full race gear.

Two boys in particular had outstanding results.

Ashton Stocker qualified 6th fastest in his age group. Yes, that means he is the number 6 BMX rider in his age group in New Zealand. What an awesome result.  He now has the right to wear the NZ6 plate on this bike.

Caleb Bellamy qualified 28th fastest in his age group. Well done, Caleb.

This means that both boys are eligible to compete in the
  UCI BMX World Championships
to be held at Auckland's Vector Arena in July 2013.

We will keep an eye out for Ashton and Caleb as they prepare for the World's. Go get 'em, boys.

Tuesday 9th April

Today we celebrate the talented HARRISON LESTER of Room 5.

The Canterbury Amateur Judo Club had their 60th Anniversary over the weekend.  As part of the celebrations a Try A Tournament was held for those not yet at official competition level.

This was Harrison's first tournament.       And what a tournament!!

Harrison won a Gold Medal in the combined under 24kg and under 28kg weight group. He also won a Silver Medal in the 6 Kyu (white belt grading).

To show that Harrison understands the importance of his martial art training, he stated during oral language to his classmates " We do judo for confidence and self-defence, we don't use it to fight people"

Good on you, Harrison.  Another example of Oaklands students achieving.

Wednesday 3rd April

Today we celebrate the talented DYLAN CREIGHTON of Room 18. Dylan recently won the Best All Rounder trophy for his T-Ball team The Halswell Demons (Halswell Softball Club).

It seems that T-ball and softball are very popular with Oaklands' students -  we certainly do very well.

Well done, Dylan and thank you for sharing your success with us.

Thursday 28th March

Mr 'Go-Get-Em'

Today we celebrate the talented JONATHAN RAPSON of Room 22. He was recently awarded the Mr 'Go-Get-Em' title for his Halswell Under 9 Boys T-ball SLUGGERS.
Jonathan received this award because he is constantly trying his best and determined to get the ball and get the out.
He is only 6 years old and has proved himself good enough to be in the under 9 boys team, instead of a mixed under 7’s team.
Jonathan's parents are very proud of him; and so are we here at Oaklands.

Tuesday 19th March

Future Softball Superstars

Today we celebrate the talented REBECCA JAMES and EMMA DOBSON.
They were part of the Halswell A Under 11 Girls softball team that won the Canterbury round robin for the year.
Their team went through the pre-Christmas and after-Christmas round with only one loss to lead the points table at the end of the season.

They now go on the play in the South Island champs being played on the 6th and 7th of April.
Well done girls and all the best for the tournament.

Monday 18th March

A future Olympic athlete

Today we celebrate the talented JACQUELINE KEENAN.
One of Jacqueline's many talents is athletics.

Last weekend Jacqueline competed in the 9-95 Inter-centre Competition at Rawhiti, organised by the New Zealand Children's Amateur Athletics Association (NZCAAA).
Jacqueline was chosen as 1 of 9 girls to represent the Canterbury team. This competition involved athletes from Canterbury, Tasman, Otago and Southland.
Jacqueline competed in the shot put and long jump.
Passing her previous 'personal best' [PB] of 6.93m, she took out third place with an enormous 7.28m. An extra 35cm is a huge improvement.
